Technical Agency Draft Recovery Plan for Fringed Campion (Silene polypetula) D 4 Georgia Ecological Services Field Office (706) 460-7161 Fringed campion Silene polypetala 1 1 Improve protection of publicly-owned populations Ongoing Current FY 2017 FY 2025 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, including Forestry Division, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Florida Natural Areas Inventory, Other owners Work type not yet selected Labor type not yet selected Cost not yet determined. Some invasive species control efforts completed in 2006-2013 at City of Chattahoochee property (Angus Gholson Nature Park)--contact Mike Jenkings (FCAC) for info. Continued effort towards invasive species control imperative at City of Chattahoochee Property, USACE properties at Lake Seminole, and at Winship Woods, Macon, GA populations. A management plan necessary to control threats from excessive deer population and associated browse at Upson County, Georgia site owned by Georgia Department of Transportation (Flint River Ravines Mitigation Tract). All public sites need long-term managment plans with mechanism for continual monitoring and habitat management. Some volunteer efforts by Leigh Brooks, Florida Native Plant Society at U.S. Army Corps Property in 2013, and previous efforts at Chattahoochee Nature Park. Research occurring at Winship Woods pop, Bibb County, GA by Heather Bowman Cutway, Mercer Univ. Prescribed fire at Flint River Ravines Tract in 2015 (observed with Lisa Kruse on 05/19/2015) appears to have killed or suppressed Silene patches near Potato Creek.Need to coordinate with GADNR WMA staff to limit disturbance from fire.
Technical Agency Draft Recovery Plan for Fringed Campion (Silene polypetula) D 4 Georgia Ecological Services Field Office (706) 460-7161 Fringed campion Silene polypetala 1 2 Private landowner contacts Ongoing Current U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Florida Natural Areas Inventory Work type not yet selected Labor type not yet selected Landowner contacts updated in 2021. Some site ae lacking viable contacts. Many sites in Georgia have up-to-date landowner contacts but enough time has passed since 2006, that a reassessment of ownership is needed. New and continued efforts should focus on landowners' current and future interest in maintaining protected species habitat.
Technical Agency Draft Recovery Plan for Fringed Campion (Silene polypetula) D 4 Georgia Ecological Services Field Office (706) 460-7161 Fringed campion Silene polypetala 1 3 Form private landowner conservation agreements Not Started U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy, Georgia Department of Natural Resources Work type not yet selected Labor type not yet selected Some sites under agricultural tax reduction easements have restrictions on subdivision of parcels but obviates landowners' incentives for formal conservation easements that would protect hardwood forest habitat(Ehrenhard tract, Taylor Co. and Fitzpatrick tract, Twiggs Co.). Results of FY 07 genetics study may assist in site protection prioritization.
Technical Agency Draft Recovery Plan for Fringed Campion (Silene polypetula) D 4 Georgia Ecological Services Field Office (706) 460-7161 Fringed campion Silene polypetala 1 4 Preserve genetic stock: select sites from which germplasm needs to be conserved Ongoing Current FY 2006 FY 2008 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Center for Plant Conservation Research: Genetics Labor type not yet selected Based on genetics study, germplasm preservation should be a priority at the following sites: (1) Musella Woods; (2) Chattahoochee sites formerly owned by Mead; (3) selected sites in the Flint Basin. Genetic variability extremely low in the Ocmulgee basin, with no or extremely low genetic diversity observed in surveyed Apalachicola sites--alleles fixed.
Technical Agency Draft Recovery Plan for Fringed Campion (Silene polypetula) D 4 Georgia Ecological Services Field Office (706) 460-7161 Fringed campion Silene polypetala 1 5 Preserve genetic stock: determine how many plants to conserve per site Ongoing Current U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, University Work type not yet selected Graduate Student, Species Expert, Contract Need to determine best method for preservation of germplasm. Shu Mei Chang observed extremely low (<5%) germination rate for seeds. Seeds extremely difficult to collect in the wild. Wild plants sporadic with seed production and few seeds observed in wild. Seed collection probably best acheived from propagation of cuttings, hand-pollination, and preservation of F1 seed. Time intensive and costly. Preservation of tissue is an option if long-term steward is available or cost-effective
Technical Agency Draft Recovery Plan for Fringed Campion (Silene polypetula) D 4 Georgia Ecological Services Field Office (706) 460-7161 Fringed campion Silene polypetala 1 6 Preserve genetic stock: institutional arrangements for germplasm conservation Ongoing Current FY 2006 FY 2008 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Center for Plant Conservation, Georgia Plant Conservation Alliance (Georgia botanical gardens) Work type not yet selected Labor type not yet selected FWS PCFO has contract (initiated in FY 06)with Historic Bok Sanctuary (HBS-CPC) to collect and provide ex situ protection for pops in Florida. GAESFO transferred approx. 80 plants to Bok Garden in 5/2007, but after about two seasons, plants looked like they were severely stressed due to heat. All plants at Bok Sanctuary died by 2015(Glen Bupp, pers. comm. 2015). Most patches out-planted at State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens died out in 2010. Callaway Gardens supposedly has self-sustaining patches and long-term survival--needs verification. Long-term maintenance of plants poses difficult problem because patches tend to die out--in cultivation--after a few years. Heather Bowman Cutway from mercer University is propagtig the species and exploring ex situ outplnating sites

Some small scale efforts pursued by GA ES Field Office in FY 2005 and FY 2006. Two new sites discovered in Ocmulgee (Shellstone Creek site in Twiggs County and Actinolite Bluff in Bibb co.). High potential for new sites to be discovered in Ocmulgee basin over amphibolite and various limestones. Tom Patrick, GADNR discovered new site in Crawford County, GA 2014 (Tanyard Creek--needs USFWS visit to estimate abundance). Mincy Tract (Taylor Co, GA) discovered circa 2012-2013).Nearly all plants gone from Musella Woods site (2015)but habitat remains intact--could be effects from drought.
