UCLA completed an effective population (Ne) size study, the results showed low Ne and high levels of inbreeding. | 6.1-1 | Landscape genetics' study and headstarting | Partially Complete | Labor type not yet selected | Work type not yet selected | Drs. Erin Toffelmier and Brad Shaffer at the University of California - Los Angeles recently completed a landscape genetics' study of SB CTS populations based on data collected across the DPS during 1986-2017. They found that SB CTS genetic diversity is highest in the northern metapopulation areas compared to the southern metapopulation areas. A first set of genetic effective population sizes was also reported. Toffelmier and Shaffer (2021) also found that SB CTS is highly inbred, potentially on its way toward an extinction vortex, and thus in need of headstarting to enhance the genetic status of the wild population. During FY22, a 5-year headstarting project (i.e., FY22-27) was funded through a Cooperative Agreement to enhance SB CTS genetic health, including principal investigation by Drs. Brad Shaffer, Erin Toffelmier, and Robert Cooper. | ||||||
