However, the RMP and BO are outdated and do not account for impacts from recent expansion of oil and gas leasing activity near RVS habitat. In addition, these documents do not analyze potential impacts on water quality and quantity from modern drilling techniques such as directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing. The private landowner was raising exotic Cherax crayfish in the same spring system occupied by Railroad Valley springfish without a permit. In 2002, NDOW LE eradicated the crayfish and presumably the Railroad Valley springfish population with rotenone (see NDOW Field Trip Report). Surveys have not been completed since the crayfish eradication took place. NDOW Field Trip reports have continued to indicate that the population is extirpated as of 2023. |
