Not Started Other California Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Forest Service Research: Habitat Status Contract 1.1.8-1 Non-native species control, Piru Creek Ongoing Current 2013 Labor type not yet selected Work type not yet selected United Water Conservation District has been treating retention ponds below the Santa Felicia Dam spillway to remove non-native aquatic predators of arroyo toad and California red-legged frog since 2012. While non-native predator populations have been kept in check onsite, though not fully eradicated, neither arroyo toads nor California red-legged frogs have been detected at the retention ponds. United Water seeks to re-evaluate management onsite, potentially directing some resources for non-native species control to Middle Piru Creek, north of Lake Piru. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel are currently engaged with United Water to address this issue. Additionally, winter FY22's pulsed-flow before-after-control-impacts study is being implemented to manage non-native predator numbers in Middle Piru Creek. This work is expected to continue in future arroyo toad non-breeding seasons, potentially including lethal non-native species control.

Agua Blanca Creek serves as a control or reference stream to compare against pulsed-flow impacts in Middle Piru Creek. Preliminary results, provided by University of California - Los Angeles researchers (i.e., Dr. Brad Shaffer et al.), suggest that pulses reduce numbers of non-native predators in areas where arroyo toad breed. What is left to determine is whether or not toads benefit demographically. This work is ongoing and expected to take place from year to year, particularly when water is sufficiently abundant from the State Water Project at Pyramid Dam. This experiment takes place during the arroyo toad non-breeding season while the species is inactive.
