FY 93: R2 ES = 20, TPWD = 15, TNC = 15. FY 94: R2 ES = 5, TPWD = 10, TNC = 10 1.36-1 • We have used the existing warbler habitat models available (Loomis model, Diamond model C with Magness overlay, Diamond model C live oak as deciduous, and Diamond model C live oak as evergreen) to estimate the amount of potentially suitable breeding and foraging habitat for the GCWA across its breeding range, which includes current distribution on public and private lands, and can be broken out by current recovery units. This data will be refined as newer habitat models become available. Ongoing Current 2012 Labor type not yet selected Work type not yet selected
Golden-cheeked Warbler F 2 Austin Ecological Services Field Office (512) 937-7371 golden-cheeked warbler Setophaga chrysoparia 1 1.37 Determine location of focal areas Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service USFWS Regional Office 2 - Ecological Services Research: Demographic Studies, Research: Other Information Species Expert, Contract, Internal Technical Assistance, Internal Administrative In coordination with Recovery Team 1.37-1 Determine the availability and placement of the focal areas and associated habitat. • In an effort to identify areas of high quality habitat within the known range of the GCWA which may support a minimum of 3,000 pairs of warblers per recovery unit, the Austin ESFO has been working on a mapping effort based on 4 independently developed models (Loomis and Diamond model C with the Magness overlay, Diamond model C live oak as evergreen, and Diamond model C live oak as deciduous) of potentially suitable GCWA habitat. Potentially suitable habitat identified in all 4 models was overlaid in GIS, with only those areas identified as high quality habitat by each of the 4 models mapped. The analysis was taken a step further to establish where at least 3 of the 4 models overlapped and identified potential high quality warbler habitat in blocks at least 500 acres in size. These 500 acre or larger blocks of potential high quality habitat are the areas that the Service and other partners need to focus conservation efforts to ensure recovery of the species. As a result of the mapping effort, these areas have been identified as the Austin ESFO’s Focus Areas for the GCWA. In order to easily identify general areas within each recovery unit where most of the individual Focus Area high quality 500-acre blocks of critically important habitat are located, the Austin ESFO has drawn lines around large groupings of these Focus Areas, and designated these areas as the Service’s GCWA Priority Areas. Ongoing Current 2012 Labor type not yet selected Work type not yet selected A draft preliminary map of GCWA Focus Areas and Priority Areas has been developed, and a write-up on the methodolgy is also available.

FY 95: R2 REFUGE = 500, TPWD = 3, DOD = 16, SA = 1, APRD = 1, LCRA = 3. 2.11-1 • Under the 1992 GCWA Recovery Plan section for Habitat Needs, it was determined that large areas of interconnected habitat on public and private lands in the 8 existing recovery units would form the core habitat preserves necessary to eventually meet the established recovery criteria for the species and ultimately remove the warbler from the endangered species list. The Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and the Balcones Canyonlands Conservation Plan (BCCP) form the core of these public lands in recovery unit 5. This year, the BCCP has put under fee simple and conservation easement approximately 30,448 acres to benefit the GCWA and other listed, proposed and candidate species. The Balcones Canyonlands NWR has also added additional acreage to its already substantial holdings, furthering the recovery goals and acreages needed on public lands within recovery unit 5. The BMPs were developed to help reduce the intensity of wildland fire and reduce potential impacts to the GCWA from the effects of the fuel treatment. The Service completed an intra-Service Endangered Species Act consultation on these BMPs and when followed no further consultation will be required with for impacts to GCWA. These BMPs enable the public to treat hazardous fules in GCWA habitat with minimal impact to GCWA. Ongoing Current 2013 Labor type not yet selected Work type not yet selected

FY 95: R2 ES = 9, R8 RES = 1, TPWD = 3. 1.24-1 Predation is a natural occurrence in GCWA habitat; however, increased fragmentation creates increased edge which can increase nest predation and reduce reproductive output (Peak 2007, pp. 632). Fragmentation of GCWA habitat can increase predation by opportunistic species, such as fox squirrels (Sciurus niger), blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata), grackles (Quiscalus spp.), and feral cats (Felis domesticus), which adapt well to fragmented and urban habitats. Most of these species have the potential to impact GCWA populations by destroying eggs, young birds, and adults. Avian predators are more abundant in GCWA habitat within 328 feet (100 meters) from edges (Arnold et al. 1996, p. 27), which may affect GCWA use and/or reproductive success (Fink 1996, p. 72, Coldren 1998, p. 77-79, 100, 103). For example, urban sprawl has resulted in an increase in the blue jay population, which feeds on eggs and nestlings and may have contributed to the warbler's extirpation from suburban areas where suitable habitat is found (Engels and Sexton 1994, p. 289; Engels 1995, p. 38-44). FY 94: R2 ES = 5, R2 REFUGE = 3, TPWD = 2, DOD =2. 1.31-1 In their breeding range, GCWA pairs have been found in habitat patches smaller than 10 hectares (ha) (24.7 acres [ac]); however, successful reproduction is more likely if patches of habitat exceed 15 ha (37 ac) (Arnold et al. 1996, p. 19; Butcher et al. 2010, p. 135-138). One study indicated that the probability of occupancy of a particular patch by GCWA increases with increasing patch size, reaching a probability of 100 percent between approximately 160 and 200 ha (400 and 500 ac) (Collier et al. 2010). Reproductive success of GCWA is higher in large, unfragmented patches of habitat as compared to small, fragmented patches, and reproductive success increases as forest edge decreases (Maas-Burleigh 1998, p. 16; Coldren 1998, pp. 74-75; Peak 2007, p. 632, Reidy et al. 2009, p. 410). Research on the wintering range found that GCWA prefer foraging in deciduous trees in pine-oak forests (Thompson 1995, p. 12; Rappole 1996, p. 15). Reproductive success of GCWAs has been shown to be greater in larger, unfragmented patches of habitat over smaller, fragmented patches, and reproductive success has been shown to increase as forest edge decreases (Maas-Burleigh 1998, p. 16; Coldren 1998, pp. 74-75; Peak 2007, p. 632, Reidy et al. 2009, p. 410) Partially Complete Labor type not yet selected Work type not yet selected

The authors found no evidence of genetic bottlenecks or genetic differentiation among populations, suggesting that gene flow among populations was unimpeded. The authors also suggested that there was no evidence of elevated risk of extinction resulting from the genetic mechanisms 6 examined (Lindsay et al. 2008, pp. 2130). However, Athrey et al. (2011, p. 1346-1348) used historical and recent samples to assess demographic changes on population genetics of the GCWA. They documented a steep decline in genetic diversity over a 100-year period, an increase in genetic differentiation in all 3 sample sites, and low effective sizes for current populations. They contribute the steep increase in genetic differentiation to increased habitat loss and fragmentation throughout the range of the GCWA and suggest that barriers to gene flow are recent phenomena (Athrey et al. 2011, pp. 1352).
