More recent work completed in 2015 by Pilger et al. for the Gila River in New Mexico. One genetic study underway in 2016. Results of ongoing genetic studies by University of New Mexico and UC Berkeley and the University of Arizona completed, including mapping of loach minnow genome and analysis of range-wide population structure. Bureau of Reclamation and BLM provided funding to complete studies. Research determined that the two stronghold populations for loach minnow are Aravaipa Creek (AZ) and the Cliff-Gila Valley (NM). These studies will be used to develop a genetics management plan (funded by BOR, completed by SW Native Aquatic Resources Recovery Center (SNARRC), which is scheduled for completion in FY2024.

Loach minnow are also on exhibit at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. "Sharing Tails" program (run by not-for-profit) aimed at educating primary grades on native fish in Arizona. BOR created a new I & E webpage and outreach, and FWS participating on committee. BOR funded Sharing Tails and other native fish outreach efforts in FY2022.

Collection efforts hampered by declining populations in the wild at Aravaipa Creek, the mainstem Gila River, and Eagle Creek.

Stock now in captivity at Bubbling Ponds from Blue River, Gila River (NM), and Aravaipa Creek. This facility was constructed specifically for captive propagation of spikedace and loach minnow. Improvements in propagation techniques resulted in greater success and more fish for reintroduction efforts in FY10 than FY09. Annual meetings are held to discuss any necessary changes at the facility. Annual coordination meetings held. Anticipate completion of genetics research and a genetics management plan in FY2023, which will include a genetics management component for hatcheries. Early discussions of establishing a second hatchery in NM in 2022.

AGFD completed captive breeding research on density of breeding fish and breeding success, and anticipate additional research as fish are available.

Hatchery reared fish have been used in reintroduction projects at the Muleshoe Preserve, Fossil Creek, Bonita Creek, and KP Creek. AGFD largely responsible for collection of stock, with assistance from other agencies. Collection efforts hampered by reduced population sizes in some streams such as Aravaipa Creek in Arizona and the Gila River in New Mexico.
