Distribution maps for KY/TN were produced in 2009 by KSNPC, UK, and KFO for use at Master Logger courses and distribution by KDOF offices. These maps are being updated currently to support completion of the species' five-year review. A special issue of Southeastern Naturalist devoted to blackside dace was published in August 2013 (Vol. 12). It included 14 separate papers that provided new information on the species' ecology, impacts and threats, restoration and recovery, and range extensions. A new paper was published in 2015 (Hitt et al. 2015) on how elevated conductivity influences blackside dace abundance (Southeastern Naturalist). The species showed sharp declines in abundance as conductivity values exceeded 350 uS/cm.

It included 4 graduate students and consisted primarily of distributional studies and research on ecology and spawning behavior/substrate preferences. Results of this research were published in a Special Issue of Southeastern Naturalist (Vol. 12) in Aug 2013. Another distributional study (occupancy study) is ongoing within the KY portion of the Upper Cumberland River drainage by the KY State Nature Preserves Commission and the KY Field Office. 80 randomly chosen reaches were sampled in 2012, with blackside dace being present at only 7 sites. Data analyses are ongoing. Additional surveys ongoing (2015) in TN portion of the upper Cumberland River system - a total of 60 sites. Data from these sites will be added to previous surveys (2012) to look at abundance, distribution, presence/absence with regard to stream conductivity, detection probability, and other factors.
Blackside Dace F 4 Kentucky Ecological Services Field Office (502) 695-0467 Blackside dace Phoxinus cumberlandensis 2 1.3.4 Based on biological data and threat analysis, investigate the need for management and implement where needed. Ongoing Current FY 2007 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Tennessee Valley Authority , Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency , Fish and Wildlife Enhancement, Kentucky Department for Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, Office of Surface Mining, Tennessee Heritage Program, USFWS Regional Office 4, Kentucky Nature Preserves Commission Research: Population Assessment, Acquisition, Management: Habitat Maintenance and Manipulation, Research: Population Surveys, Management: Population Monitoring Volunteer, Graduate Student, Species Expert, Contract, Internal Technical Assistance, Internal Field Assistance The KY Ecological Services Field Office (KFO) worked cooperatively in 2006/07 with a number of federal and state partners (NRCS, Univ. Louisville, KDFWR, etc.), as well as four private landowners, to initiate an approximate 2,300-foot restoration project on Mill Branch in Knox County, Kentucky. Mill Branch is a second order tributary of Stinking Creek that had been degraded through channelization of the mainstem, removal of riparian vegetation, over-grazing of adjacent pastures, and placement of culverts within the stream channel. Blackside dace had persisted within the stream, but population numbers were low compared to other streams within its range. The proposed project was designed to alleviate these problems by restoring instream and riparian habitats for the species using "natural channel design" techniques. The project continues to be monitored both physically and biologically. The restored stream is stable, and blackside dace are using portions of the restored reach. Initial monitoring was conducted 2006-2010 and continued from 2014-2016.
Blackside Dace F 4 Kentucky Ecological Services Field Office (502) 695-0467 Blackside dace Phoxinus cumberlandensis 3 1.3.5 Determine number of individuals required to maintain viable population. Ongoing Current FY 1995 - FY 1999 Other Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency , Fish and Wildlife Enhancement, Tennessee Heritage Program, USFWS Regional Office 4, Kentucky Nature Preserves Commission, Other Research: Genetics Species Expert, Contract Costs are unknown; research conducted by Strange & Burr (1995) - Genetic variability and metapopulation dynamics in the federally threatened blackside dace - conducted for KDFWR with Sect. 6 funds. New study initiated in 2015 with Austin Peay State University ($21K). The study has involved tissue collection from across the species' range and subsequent genetic analyses that will look at diversity, gene flow, and viability. Initial samples were collected from 11 streams during 2016-2017, and additional samples (10-15 streams) were collected during 2017-2020. Genetic analyses are ongoing.
Blackside Dace F 4 Kentucky Ecological Services Field Office (502) 695-0467 Blackside dace Phoxinus cumberlandensis 3 2 Search for additional populations and suitable habitat. Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 Other U.S. Forest Service, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency , Fish and Wildlife Enhancement, Tennessee Heritage Program, USFWS Regional Office 4, Kentucky Nature Preserves Commission Research: Population Surveys Graduate Student, Species Expert, Contract Initial collections conducted by KNPC throughout the upper Cumberland River basin (1993-1994); additional surveys conducted by Mattingly et al. (Tenn Tech) beginning in June 2002; other surveys completed by KDFWR or consultants as part of mining permits, road projects, or other development activities. In Summer 2012, the Service and KSNPC cooperated on a range-wide survey effort that involved quantitative searches at 84 100-m, randomly chosen sites. The species was observed at only 7 of 84 reaches, including 1 new stream. Additional surveys initiated in summer 2015 within the Clear Fork, Yellow Creek, and Jellico systems in TN (KSNPC, Morehead State University, KFO, and TFO). A total of approx. 60 sites were visited and sampled quantitatively. A new population discovered in July 2017 (TWRA survey) from the upper Roaring Paunch Creek system near Oneida, Scott County, TN.
