Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service USFWS Region 6, Endangered Species Division Management: Habitat Maintenance and Manipulation Internal Technical Assistance Extant populations on private property and small BLM parcel, the largest is on a TNC owned preserve. Introduced populations are on USFS lands. Herbivory study on TNC preserve found high herbivory in the fall/winter due to a broken fence. Repairs were made in 2016. Caging of individuals on the TNC preserve and BLM have occurred. Fencing of one USFS introduction site completed in 2019. Weed pulls on TNC property occurred in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 with large volunteer effort. Small volunteer effort in 2020 during the pandemic. Fire in August 2017 impacted Tie Fork introduction sites on USFS lands. The species was not impacted. FY 20: USFS obtained funds to acquire private Tie Fork parcel with suitable habitat. Will evaluate introduction sites in 2020 based on drone imagery.

Clay Phacelia F 6 Utah Ecological Services Field Office (801) 975-3330 Clay phacelia Phacelia argillacea 3 321 Seed selection for harvest. Partially Complete Prior to FY 1995 FY 2026 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Regional Office 6 Research: Propagation Species Expert, Contract Red Butte Garden/Univ. of Utah, U.S. Forest Service have collected seeds in the past. This action requires periodic seed collections to ensure viable seed collection is preserved ex-situ. A limited seed collection was performed on the TNC preserve in 2018 for a current greenhouse propagation effort funded by the USFS. A limited seed collection was perform on the TNC preserve in 2020 for a greenhouse propagation effort funded by the BLM.
Clay Phacelia F 6 Utah Ecological Services Field Office (801) 975-3330 Clay phacelia Phacelia argillacea 3 322 Field testing. Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Regional Office 6 Research: Propagation Volunteer, Species Expert, Contract Red Butte Garden, U.S. Forest Service, BLM FY20: BLM contract established in 2020 to grow plants in greenhouse and sow seeds on BLM property. USFS and UVU developed successful micropropagation protocol.
Clay Phacelia F 6 Utah Ecological Services Field Office (801) 975-3330 Clay phacelia Phacelia argillacea 3 323 Establish a seed source. Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Regional Office 6 Research: Propagation Contract FY 18: Red Butte Garden maintains a long term seed bank for the species. USFS is funding a seed increase effort with Tom Glass, High Mountain Nursery in Draper. FY 19: UVU also started micropropagation efforts for the species. Tom Glass continues to propagate the species in his greenhouse. FY20: BLM funding Tom Glass to propagate species in greenhouse. UVU developed successful micropropagation effort through embryo rescue. FY21: BLM discontinued funding due to seed loss from over-scarification that pulverized the seeds. UVU continues to propagate the species in the greenhouse, pollinate using blue orchard bees, and bulk collecting seeds. FY22: USFS has infrastructure funding to continue propagation at UVU. BLM also has funding for propagation and pilot introductions.
Clay Phacelia F 6 Utah Ecological Services Field Office (801) 975-3330 Clay phacelia Phacelia argillacea 3 324 Propagation by meristeming. Complete Prior to FY 1995 FY 2020 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Regional Office 6 Work type not yet selected Labor type not yet selected Dr. Susan Meyer, USFS, worked with Utah Valley University to do embryo rescue of seeds in an attempt to overcome seed dormancy. They developed a successful propagation protocol for the species.
Clay Phacelia F 6 Utah Ecological Services Field Office (801) 975-3330 Clay phacelia Phacelia argillacea 3 33 Establish seed/seedlings in natural setting. Ongoing Current FY 2007 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Forest Service , U.S. Fish and Wildlife Regional Office 6 Management: Propagation, Management: Reintroduction, Research: Management Techniques, Research: Propagation, Research: Reintroduction, Management: Population Monitoring Volunteer, Species Expert, Contract, Internal Technical Assistance, Internal Field Assistance, Internal Administrative U.S. Forest Service, Red Butte Garden, TNC, UNPS, and FWS. Approx. 2 dozen seedlings germinated on USFWS in 2009. Seeds placed in research plots in 2007. 1 seedling in 2008. Plans to increase off site seed production to place seeds in field. 2016, USFS is germinating 100-500 seeds to be propagated for seed increase through 2019. Plan is to augment declining wild populations and introduction sites on USFS lands. FY20: BLM planting in Oct 2019 of 44 plants was unsuccessful. Only one plant survived to the following spring. FY20: re-examine the suitability of introduction sites in order to more carefully match introduction sites with the TNC Tucker Preserve in terms of hydrology and vegetation cover prior to another round of seed introductions. This will be done by evaluating drone imagery collected in July/Aug 2020. FY21: USFS established pilot introduction sites on their lands in Fall 2020. Monitoring seedling establishment and a few seedlings were detected in spring 2021.
