Watercress Darter RF(2) 4 Alabama Ecological Services Field Office (251) 441-5181 Watercress darter Etheostoma nuchale 1 1 Monitor habitat and populations Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 Research Research Research: Population Surveys, Research: Habitat Status, Research: Habitat Requirements, Research: Management Techniques, Research: Taxonomic Studies, Research: Demographic Studies, Research: Predation, Research: Competition, Research: Disease, Research: Environmental Contaminants, Research: Other Information, Research: Genetics Contract Populations are monitored yearly (seasonaly) by biologist from Birmingham Southern College, Tennesse Aquarium and Univ. of Alabama. In 2012 populations in Seven Springs have appeared to have declined in relation to the changes in vegetation due to canopy cover blocking sunlight penetration and retarding plant growth (2012). Populations at 7 Springs has rebounded (Late Spring 2016 Drennen and Howell) since the removal of vegetation shading (Winter 2016). Additional surveys initiated in 2018. Populations at Roebuck Springs appear to be rebounding (2012 and 2016). Additional tradegy in 2013 resulted in loss of individuals in spring run at Roebuck springs efforts are on going to safegaurd spring system. Drennen, Howell and Abrams discovered new population of watercress darters in Cunningham Creek, Pinson AL.(2016). This is a new watershed for the species and is believed not connected to previous range. Ongoing survey of entire range by the Tennessee Aquarium (Kuhajda); 2020 Conservation Fund for watercress, rush, and vermilion darters Project Goal: To enhance and preserve habitat for trust species in the Birmingham Metropolitan area through partnership-driven community engagement; expose diverse communities to principles of conservation, ecological restoration methodologies, and ecological services career opportunities; and provide training opportunities for habitat assessment methodologies to a broad coalition of conservation specialists.
Watercress Darter RF(2) 4 Alabama Ecological Services Field Office (251) 441-5181 Watercress darter Etheostoma nuchale 1 2.1 Study habitat degradation Ongoing Current Prior to FY 1995 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Services Division, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Alabama Department of Environmental Management, Research , National Wildlife Refuge , USFWS Regional Office 4 - Atlanta Research: Habitat Status, Research: Habitat Requirements Volunteer, Graduate Student, Species Expert, Contract, Internal Technical Assistance, Internal Field Assistance, Internal Administrative Studies continue of vegatation changes in relation to watercerss darters in Seven Springs , Thomas Spring (WNWR) and Roebuck Springs. Passed tresspassing by researchers into Glenn Springs has limited availability. Recent meetings between Drennen and landowner has loosened restrictions into Glenn Springs (2012). Second violation by the City of Birmingham in 2013 resulted in death of < 1000 individuals at Roebuck Springs. Meetings with city in 2016 have shown coordination of efforts to watchgauard springs. 2023: USFWS and GSA Study began to monitor spring levels at Roebuck, Seven Springs, as Thomas Springs for the control site

Additional tradegy in 2013 in the spring run has resulted to increased coordination with the city in safegaurding the population.; From settlement due to 2008 event, Bio Swale built to improve runoff conditions from parking lot maintained through city with assistance from Freshwater Land Trust 2018 7 Springs and Glenn Springs Continued development of neighboring land is worrisome due to possibility of siltation pronlems.
